Wardrobe Organisation | Make It Life Changing

I often hear people refer to a declutteirng experience as life changing, and a wardrobe edit is no exception. Our clothes define our style, and they’re a snapshot of where we are at in our lives. They hold special memories, and they hold the promise of up coming occasions.

And this is why wardrobes need an organised system, and for order to be maintained. Here’s a few key elements to keep in mind when reorganising your wardrobe:
  • If it hasn't been worn it for 12 months, it can be donated. That’s a great one for those easy items you don’t have to think too hard about. However, a vintage op shop find, or a staple item for example, may need some extra thought. Those precious sentimental items (think rock band concert t shirt!), are keepers in their own right – just not in your wardrobe!
  • Start (slowly) adopting the ‘learn to live with less’ motto – if you can apply this, you’ll be able to get rid of more

For those items that make you hesitate, ask yourself some hard questions:
  • How did this make me feel the last time I put it on?
  • Does this item cause me some sort of inconvenience? E.g. does it have to be ironed before wearing it, does it cost me money in dry cleaning?
  • Do I have to be a certain weight (more or less) to fit into it again? If so, remove the item and in turn remove the pressure
  • Does this item belong to the style that you yearn for, but never actually feel comfortable in? If so, get rid of it.

Now now that you're prepared:
  • Invest in wooden hangers
  • Take every single thing out of your wardrobe (not just clothing!)
  • Divide all items into large laundry baskets – items to donate, clothes to keep, and items that belong in another area of the house
  • Plan for all items (clothes, handbags, scarves, belts, shoes, jewellery) to have it's own place
  • Return the items to their new place in the new organised state

There are many systems that can help organise clothes within a wardrobe – for example by colour, style, or occasion. It is a personal choice, but I first recommend to clients when editing their wardrobe to group their items as follows:

  • Work clothes (if applicable) grouped together. Within this, sort by bottoms, and by tops (short and long sleeve)
  • Dresses
  • Suits
  • Tshirts
  • Long sleeve tops
  • Underwear & socks
  • Hats, scarves, belts
  • Jewellery

I treated myself recently to a major wardrobe declutter, which saw me get rid of about 50% of my clothes. My only wish is that I did it sooner! It’s much easier to choose my outfit for the next day, and it’s much easier to put clothes away immediately (rather than on the end of the bed!). New clothes that I purchase is now much more of a deliberate choice, which in turn saves me money. And the best bit - I feel better about having less clutter.

What tips do you have to keep your wardrobe organised?
